What is “Skin Prep”?

A liquid called skin prep is applied to the skin to form a protective layer or barrier. The protective film protects against friction and shear after medical tapes and bandages are removed. Is also used to prepare the skin for attachment of drainage tubes and wound care bandages, as well as external catheters and ostomy wafers. Skin prep is a water-proof liquid which forms a transparent layer over the skin to protect it against irritation and allow you to inspect the skin.

What are the Different Styles of Skin Prep Applicators?

Skin Wipes – Individually packed wipes that fit easily in a purse or pocket. Because the liquid is contained within the wipe, it is easier to apply the product concious precisely where it is needed.

Spray – A spray bottle with a spraynozzle. Sprays onto the skin from the nozzle and allows for greater coverage. This method is less effective than a wipe that covers only the skin that is in direct contact with it.

Dauber – Also known as a blotter or a squeezer, this type application lets you squeeze the bottle to release more liquid at once. You can use the dauber to cover large areas or focus on certain areas. Coloplast is the only company that makes the dauber or blotter style applicator. This is a shame as it offers the best of both the worlds. It combines the control and coverage of a wiping device with the precision of a skin prep product.

Applying skin prep is simple, even on the knees, elbows or other awkward places. The film is transparent, so you can see the skin underneath it for inspection. The skin prep is liquid, so it glides on the skin and forms a waterproof but breathable barrier to protect it. Some skin prep products can last for up to 96 hours before they need to be reapplied. Please refer to the packaging to determine wear time. Wear time is also affected by adhesives and other factors. Skin prep is quick drying and prepares the skin to adhere to adhesives. This increases wear time for external catheters, adhesive bandages, and other devices. While most skin prep can be removed with soap and water, you can also use an adhesive removal product to remove both the adhesive and skin preparation. Skin prep products can be used on infants. However, it is important to consult your doctor before applying any product to your child.
